GUATEMALA: Pérez Molina convicted

In early December, a Guatemalan court sentenced former president Otto Pérez Molina (Partido Patriota, 2012-2015) and his former vice president, Roxana Baldetti, on fraud and conspiracy counts, each receiving a 16-year prison sentence. The sentences have been welcomed by civil society groups as a step forward in efforts to address past impunity. However, the convictions come as anti-corruption efforts continue to significantly  deteriorate under the conservative Vamos government led by President Alejandro Giammattei and his discredited attorney general María Consuelo Porras who was sanctioned by the US in 2021 [SSR-21-09], with over 20 justice operators, including well-known independent anti-corruption judges like Miguel Angel Gálvez, forced into exile.
