ECUADOR: Lasso’s future on the line

Ecuador’s President Guillermo Lasso could see his political future defined in the next few weeks. In late December Lasso unexpectedly intimated that he would seek re-election in 2025. As Lasso approaches the halfway point of his four-year term, his popularity is languishing and re-election looks a distant prospect. To become at all credible, he will need to acquire some political momentum, starting with next month’s regional and municipal elections and, crucially, a referendum on constitutional reforms promoted by his government.
