El Salvador homicides fall but at what cost?

There were a total of 496 homicides registered in El Salvador in 2022, down 57%, according to the defence minister, René Merino Monroy, the lowest figure since President Nayib Bukele came to power in 2019. Merino celebrated this figure, saying that “in August 2015 there were 918 homicides in a single month, more than double the figure for the whole year [in 2022]”.
