In brief: New electric car laboratory to begin operations in Mexico

* Mexico’s Universidad Politécnica de Querétaro (UPQ), a higher education institute in Querétaro state, has announced that a laboratory specialising in electric vehicles (EVs) will begin operations midway through this year. According to UPQ, in response to the growing manufacture, use and sale of EVs and the intention of Mexico, the US and Canada to produce them in the region, the laboratory aims to develop relevant technology and train students to work in the industry. According to a 6 December 2022 report by Mexico’s automobile industry association (AMIA), sales of hybrid and electric cars represented just 4.5% of total light vehicles sales in the first nine months of 2022. AMIA notes that the automotive industry represents 3.5% of Mexico’s total GDP.
