*Business lobby groups in Paraguay and Uruguay, as well as Bolivia, have released a joint statement expressing concern over a toll that Argentina’s transport ministry has imposed since 1 January on ships using the Paraguay-Paraná waterway, one of the main riverine transport corridors in South America. The Unión Industrial Paraguaya (UIP), Uruguay’s Cámara de Industrias del Uruguay (CIU) and Bolivia’s Cámara de Exportadores, Logística y Promoción de Inversiones de Santa Cruz (CADEX) stated that the US$1.47 charge per tonne for shipments between the Port of Santa Fe in northeastern Argentina and the confluence of the Paraná River on the Paraguay-Argentina border, “represents a violation to regional rules” and would “entail an additional cost for import and export companies, affecting the whole logistics cost”. The groups called on their respective governments to carry out the actions necessary to repeal the toll, while urging Argentina’s government to “adopt the necessary measures to urgently resolve this situation in a way that respects written agreements on the issue, safeguarding and facilitating the successful carrying out of international trade.”
