* Uruguay’s ministry of livestock, agriculture, and fisheries (MGAP) has extended an agricultural emergency for 90 days across the whole country due to prolonged drought. The emergency, which applies to the livestock, dairy, fruit & vegetable and agriculture sectors, had been set to end on 24 January but will now be in place until 24 April. The poultry, beekeeping and forestry sectors will also be included under the extension. In a press conference, Uruguay’s livestock, agriculture & fishing minister, Fernando Mattos, said that so far 1,300 producers had applied to access the emergency agricultural fund. Mattos also announced he had started a tour of the interior, which will see him visit five departments initially, to provide support to producers and evaluate possible new measures and options in case the lack of rainfall persists.
