ECUADOR: Corruption scandal hits close to home for Lasso

A political storm is gathering around Ecuador’s President Guillermo Lasso amid allegations of widespread corruption linked to the running of state companies. Whilst Lasso himself has not been linked to the scandal, his brother-in-law, businessman Danilo Carrera Drouet, was named by digital media outlet La Posta as the leader of the alleged corruption racket. As part of efforts to restore public trust in his government, on 17 January Lasso fired the CEOs of 13 state-owned companies, including three that were allegedly being used by public officials for private gain.
