COLOMBIA: Major spat breaks out with Guatemala

A serious diplomatic row has erupted between Colombia and Guatemala after Rafael Curruchiche, the head of the anti-impunity unit in Guatemala’s attorney general’s office, said that “legal actions” would be taken against Colombia’s defence minister, Iván Velásquez. Curruchiche said that the move against Velásquez relates to his leadership of the since dissolved United Nations-backed International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (Cicig) from 2013-2019. Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro offered a staunch defence of Velásquez, and intensified the row by accusing the Guatemalan government of corruption.
