MEXICO: Militarisation concerns rise

Two recent announcements have renewed concerns over militarisation in Mexico and indicated that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has no intention of lessening his reliance on the military this year. First was the deployment of national guard (GN) troops to metro stations in Mexico City (CDMX). Then came the naming of a military official as the new federal deputy public security minister, ensuring military presence within another supposedly civilian institution.
