GUATEMALA: Presidential race takes shape

Former First Lady Sandra Torres, of the main opposition Unidad Nacional de la Esperanza (UNE), has formally announced her bid for the presidency ahead of Guatemala’s general elections on 25 June. Torres, who recently benefitted from the dismissal of a case involving alleged illegal electoral finance [WR-22-49], is the latest in a string of figures to publicly declare their candidacies for the presidential race in which Zury Ríos, the daughter of late dictator Efraín Ríos Montt (1982-1983), of the ultra-right-wing Valor, remains the favourite.
