Leap in homicides raises questions in Uruguay

Homicides jumped by as much as 25.2% in Uruguay in 2022, reaching a total of 383, according to figures released by the interior minister, Luis Alberto Heber, on 17 January. The figures were eye-catching because crime in general and homicides in particular were seized upon by the present right-of-centre government while in opposition to claim that the left-wing Frente Amplio (FA), which governed the country from 2005-2020, had presided over a sharp deterioration in public security.
