In brief: Poverty and unemployment fall in Ecuador

* Ecuador’s national statistics institute (INEC) has released the latest figures on unemployment and poverty, which show that the unemployment rate in December 2022 stood at 3.2% and the underemployment rate was 19.4% - down from 3.8% and 22.9% the previous month, respectively. In year-on-year terms, unemployment was down from 4.1% in December 2021 and underemployment down from 23.0%. INEC also released figures showing that the poverty rate was 25.2% and the extreme poverty rate was 8.2% in December 2022. In urban areas, poverty stood at 17.8% and extreme poverty at 3.9%, while in rural areas the poverty rate was 41.0% and the extreme poverty rate was 17.4%. The overall poverty rate fell by 0.2 percentage points compared with the previous rate recorded in June 2022, while the extreme poverty rate fell by 2.5 percentage points.
