BOLIVIA: Protesters issue ultimatum over ‘political prisoners’

Grassroots opposition groups across Bolivia staged a nationwide ‘cabildo’ on 25 January, holding mass public gatherings to decide whether to resume anti-government protests which were suspended a week earlier. The de facto leader of the protests – Rómulo Calvo, the president of the opposition-affiliated civil society organisation Comité Cívico pro Santa Cruz (CCPSC) – announced at the end of the cabildo that President Luis Arce’s administration would be given 30 days to release all “political prisoners” or face “removal”. That seems a far-fetched threat, but a renewed wave of unrest would pile further pressure on the government, which is struggling with widening divisions in the ruling left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS).
