COLOMBIA: ELN talks rescued but Farc dissidents remain a challenge

President Gustavo Petro’s government held crisis talks with the Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN) guerrilla group from 17-21 January to smooth over a new year’s gaffe in which Petro prematurely announced that the group had agreed to a ceasefire [WR-23-01]. The emergency summit put peace talks with the ELN back on track, but further difficulties came to the fore this week with other groups that have in theory reached a ceasefire with the government. On 21 January, Defence Minister Iván Velásquez warned dissident units of the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) guerrilla group that the government would suspend a ceasefire with them if it continues to be breached.
