* Costa Rica’s tourism institute (ICT), a government body, has released new figures showing that 2.35m tourists visited Costa Rica in 2022, of which 2.12m arrived via air. According to the ICT, the 2022 figure, which represented 75% of tourist arrivals registered prior to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic which struck in March 2020, was over a million more than in 2021 and was higher than the 2.02m figure forecast for 2022 by the authorities. The ICT highlights that the US remains the main source of tourists, accounting for 1.25m tourist arrivals via air with all North American airlines operating in Costa Rica prior to the pandemic having resumed their services, as well as expanding flights. The ICT highlights in particular the rise in tourists from Canada, with 171,033 visiting in 2022 – up by 121,116 on 2021. Europe accounted for 410,832 of the tourists who travelled via air, of which 70,425 came from the UK, followed by Germany (66,716), France (59,504), and Spain (53,217).
