VENEZUELA: OHCHR visits amid fears for NGOs
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, arrived in Venezuela for a two-day visit on 26 January, landing in Caracas at a time when human rights under President Nicolás Maduro’s administration are once again under the spotlight. Venezuelan NGOs have warned that they face an existential threat from a government bill that would ban them from taking part in nebulously defined ‘political’ or ‘destabilising’ activities and require them to submit to extensive financial audits.
