BRAZIL: Yanomami genocide probe gets go ahead

Brazil’s supreme court (STF) has ordered an investigation into whether members of the former right-wing government led by Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023) were responsible for genocide and other crimes against the indigenous Yanomami. STF Justice Luis Roberto Barroso ordered the probe on 30 October just days after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva accused his predecessor of promoting “genocide”, in the wake of the dissemination of images of severely malnourished indigenous Yanomami children and adults [WR-23-04], and declared a health emergency in the Yanomami reserve, an area of 10m hectares populated by around 27,000 indigenous people.
