GUATEMALA: TSE faces familiar criticism as election season officially begins
Just over a week after officially calling the 25 June 2023 general elections on 20 January, Guatemala’s electoral authority (TSE) rejected the presidential candidacy of Thelma Cabrera, an indigenous candidate for the left-wing opposition Movimiento para la Liberación de los Pueblos (MLP). Amid doubts regarding the justification for the TSE’s decision, the move has drawn condemnation from leading figures associated with the fight against corruption (Cabrera’s running mate was former human rights ombudsman [PDH] Jordán Rodas, who was similarly linked with anti-impunity efforts [WR-22-34]). It is fanning familiar fears regarding the TSE’s integrity amid the continued backsliding in anti-corruption efforts under the conservative Vamos government led by President Alejandro Giammattei and his discredited attorney general (AG), María Consuelo Porras.
