In brief: New solar park unveiled in Mexico

*Mexico’s government has unveiled a new 2,000-hectare solar park in Puerto Peñasco, in the northern state of Sonora. According to Sonora governor Alfonso Durazo, the solar park is the seventh largest in the world. Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard led a visit to the solar power plant with representatives from 80 countries and 25 international organisations, during which he also gave a presentation of the government’s Plan Sonora, which promises largescale renewable energy investment in the state and of which the solar power plant forms an integral part. Following his visit to the solar park, US ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar tweeted that “North America is prepared to become a global leader in the generation of clean energy and the fight against climate change.” The power plant, which is being developed by state-run electricity firm the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), is not expected to start operating before 2027.
