In brief: Colombia’s Petro presents national development plan

* Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro has presented congress with his government’s national development plan, which is intended to guide public policy until the end of his term in 2026. The development plan, which was drawn up with extensive citizen participation from 51 “regional dialogues” around the country, proposes public investments amounting to Col$1,154trn (US$241bn). The plan, which Petro has framed as vital to his flagship “total peace” project, is based on five core themes: “ordering territory around water and environmental justice”; “human security and social justice”; “the human right to food”; “productive transformation, internationalisation, and climate action”; and “regional convergence”. Congress must now approve or propose changes to the plan.
