VENEZUELA: Maduro reaches out to evangelicals

Embroiled in a long-running spat with the Catholic Church, Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro has reached out to evangelical Christian leaders with a government programme to restore the country’s churches. The initiative has not been unanimously well received by Venezuela’s growing evangelical population, however. César Mermejo, the president of Venezuela’s evangelical council, warned in a 7 February article in Spanish national daily El País that Maduro was “catapulting” evangelicals “into a pre-electoral scenario during a moment of tension between the government and the Catholic Church”.
