EL SALVADOR: Impact of gang crackdown acknowledged

El Salvador’s investigative media publication El Faro has joined other critics of President Nayib Bukele in recognising the significant impact of the state of emergency, in place since March 2022, in dismantling gang structures in the country. An El Faro report published last week was clear that the “visible absence of gang structures, for the first time in a long while, is a fundamental change in the life of thousands of Salvadoreans”. However, El Faro and other critics have also been clear about the major costs of the measures in terms of human rights and democracy, with constitutional guarantees suspended and over 63,000 people arrested. The recent inauguration of a 40,000 capacity ‘mega-prison’ to ease the prison system is set to fan these concerns.
