Lasso suffers big defeat as Correismo savours electoral success

The left-wing party of Ecuador’s former president Rafael Correa (2007-2017), Revolución Ciudadana (RC), which carries his initials, excelled in provincial and municipal elections staged on 5 February. RC won control of no fewer than nine of the country’s 24 provinces, including the four most populous, as well as Quito and Guayaquil, ending the stranglehold of the conservative Partido Social Cristiano (PSC) over the coastal city and business hub which had endured for three decades. An emboldened Correismo will ratchet up the pressure on a weakened President Guillermo Lasso, who tasted defeat in each of the eight questions put to voters in a referendum that looked like a plebiscite on his rule. With more than two years of his term left, Lasso could struggle to cling on as deputies push for early elections.
