In brief: Inflation drops slightly in Brazil

* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the consumer price index for January, which put monthly inflation at 0.53%. This was down by 0.09 percentage points on the monthly rate in December. Annual inflation in January was 5.77%, down 0.02 percentage points on December. The biggest monthly price increases in January were in communications (+2.09%), “personal expenses” (+0.76%), domestic goods (+0.70%), and food and drink (+0.59%). The only category in which prices fell was clothing (-0.27%).
