* Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has announced that some 14,000 frozen public works projects will be resumed. Speaking at the launch of a roadbuilding project in Maruim municipality, in the north-eastern state of Sergipe, Lula said that “over 14,000 projects that were paralysed over the past six years will be revived, because Brazil needs to grow and generate income, consumption, education, and an improvement in people’s quality of life”. Transport Minister Renan Filho yesterday promised that infrastructure will rise significantly under Lula compared to his predecessor, former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023). “The previous government, over four years with resources from the national budget, invested nearly R$20bn [US$3.83bn],” Filho said. In contrast, he said that “this year alone we’ve been guaranteed R$22bn for the [transport] ministry, which will give a new drive to public works in the country”.
