ECUADOR: Minister toppled as corruption allegations pile up

Ecuador’s agriculture minister, Bernardo Manzano, has become the latest casualty of a rising tide of corruption allegations levelled at President Guillermo Lasso’s government. Manzano resigned on 14 February after the digital media outlet La Posta accused him of securing his ministerial position through an illegal backchannel that is allegedly run by a close friend of the Lasso family. Manzano’s resignation came just four days after that of Hugo Aguiar, the CEO of state oil company Petroecuador, whose office was raided by prosecutors looking into alleged extortion.
