Health reform to put Petro’s alliance to the test

Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro’s broad legislative alliance, which spans left-wing, centrist, and centre-right parties, is about to face its first real stress test. The government’s healthcare reform bill, which was unveiled on 13 February, has opened divisions within the cabinet itself, and amid signs of lukewarm public support the conditions look ripe for rebellion from some of the government’s more reluctant allies in congress. The scale of any such rebellion, and the way Petro chooses to respond, could set the tone for the rest of his presidency.
