Agustín Gerez, the president of Argentina’s state power company Energía Argentina (Enarsa), has been widely cited by the local media as saying that the construction of the Néstor Kirchner gas pipeline, a major natural gas pipeline in the Vaca Muerta shale basin in Neuquén province, is on schedule and, as per the “
ambitious schedule”, should be operational
“before the start of next winter”. Named after former president
Néstor Kirchner (2003-2007), the pipeline will link the Vaca Muerta shale oil and gas deposits in Patagonia to the capital Buenos Aires and other consumption centres when it is complete. The inauguration date of the pipeline is vital for the government because it will allow a greater internal supply of gas to meet national demands and reduce the need for energy imports during the winter.
