*Mexico’s President
Andrés Manuel López Obrador has confirmed that US electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Tesla will open a plant in Mexico. Speculation has mounted surrounding the possibility of a Tesla plant opening in Mexico in recent weeks, with Foreign Minister
Marcelo Ebrard meeting with senior executives from the company on 14 February. López Obrador said the location of the plant still needed to be decided, stating that Nuevo León state, on the border with the US and previously mentioned as a potential location, was not suitable due to lack of water supply. López Obrador has suggested that Hidalgo state would be a good location for the plant, due to its proximity to the Felipe Ángeles international airport (AIFA). The airport, a pet project of the president, has come under criticism for being underutilised and under resourced.
