In brief: New business openings fall in Brazil

* Brazil’s economy ministry has announced that a net total of 2.14m businesses opened in 2022. According to an economy ministry statement, 3.83m new companies were opened – down by 4.8% on 2021, but up by 14.1% compared to 2020, when the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic first hit. Meanwhile, 1.69m businesses closed during 2022. The statement noted that business openings between September and December 2022 totalled 1.09m, down 9.9% year-on-year and down 21.7% on the previous four-month period. Over the same period, business closures totalled 539,423, up 10.7% year-on-year but down 11.9% on the previous four-month period.
