VENEZUELA: Crackdown on illegal gold mining

President Nicolás Maduro’s government has long been accused of benefitting financially from rampant illegal gold mining in Venezuela. In recent months, however, the security forces have waged a campaign against the organised crime groups, known as sindicatos, that run many of the illegal gold camps. On 20 February the strategic commander of the armed forces, General Domingo Hernández Lárez, announced details on the latest raid.
