BRAZIL: Franco investigation reopened

Brazil’s justice minister, Flávio Dino, has ordered a new investigation by the federal police into the murder of the black councillor and human rights activist Marielle Franco and her driver in March 2018. Franco, who belonged to the left-wing Partido Socialismo e Liberdade (PSOL), was an outspoken critic of police brutality in Rio de Janeiro favelas, denouncing extra-judicial killings, and a vocal advocate of improved rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) community.
