GUATEMALA: Questionable candidacies cast doubt on electoral process

The decision by Guatemala’s electoral authority (TSE) ahead of general elections on 25 June to exclude the presidential candidacy of Thelma Cabrera, of the opposition left-wing indigenous Movimiento para la Liberación de los Pueblos (MLP) [WR-23-05], has stirred up controversy and sparked protests. Like the judiciary, the TSE is one of the institutions affected by the democratic backsliding occurring under President Alejandro Giammattei, and the exclusion of Cabrera, whose running mate Jordán Rodas was identified with anti-impunity efforts, comes as other candidates whose credentials would appear more questionable, have hitherto received the green light to run.
