VENEZUELA: NGO bill sparks fears of Nicaragua-style crackdown

NGOs in Venezuela have warned that they face an existential threat from a government bill that would place stringent controls on the sector. The bill, which was approved in its first reading in the national assembly on 24 January, has been compared to a similar law in Nicaragua, where hundreds of NGOs have been shuttered as part of a crackdown on civil society by President Daniel Ortega’s authoritarian government.
