PARAGUAY: Shadow of corruption hangs over elections

Paraguay will hold a general election and pick a new president for a five-year term on 30 April. Amid internal backstabbing within the ruling Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC) – the party of the late dictator Alfredo Stroessner (1954-1989) that has kept a grip on power for the better part of the last eight decades – corruption allegations also hang over senior political figures.
