MEXICO: Concerns rise over missing anti-mining activists

Protesters in the town of Aquila in Mexico’s southwestern Michoacán state brought operations to a halt at an iron mine owned by a local subsidiary of the international steel manufacturer Ternium on 22 January. The protests were prompted by the disappearance of two local activists who had been critical of mining activity in the area. The case has highlighted the tensions that exists between mining companies and many local communities in Mexico.
