In brief: Mexico’s industrial activity stagnates in January

* Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has published new data for its monthly index of industrial activity (Imai), showing that industrial activity remained at the same level in January 2023 as compared to the previous month. Activity in the utilities sector (electricity generation and transmission, and the provision of water and gas) rose by 0.8%, manufacturing by 0.7%, and mining by 0.2%, whilst activity in the construction industry fell by 1%. In seasonally adjusted annual terms, industrial production rose by 2.5% in January 2023 compared with January 2022. This increase was driven by a rise of 4.4% in utilities, 4.1% in manufacturing, and 2.9% in construction, while mining was down by 3.9%.
