In brief: DR receives first visit from World Bank president

* The Dominican Republic’s President Luis Abinader has received the first official visit to the country by a president of the World Bank (WB). Abinader met with WB President David Malpass to discuss the challenging global economic situation; ways to enable private capital and attract more investment; the “devastating insecurity” in neighbouring Haiti and the associated impacts on the Dominican Republic; the regulation of state-owned water and sanitation companies; and widening the country’s tax base. Posting on Twitter, Malpass stated that he and Abinader had also spoken about “ways to improve competitiveness and the business environment” such as “strengthening regulations, implementing reforms to improve service delivery, and simplifying the tax system”. Malpass also praised the Dominican Republic’s solid growth, strong dialogue with the private sector, and active engagement with the WB. In a statement, the Dominican government stated that the visit reflected the confidence that international organisations have in the government given its “excellent economic performance”, highlighting that the country’s GDP growth of 4.9% in 2022 was above the regional average.
