In brief: Mining exports down in Peru

* Peru’s main extractive lobby, the Sociedad Nacional de Minería, Petróleo y Energía (SNMPE), has said that mining exports totalled US$2.47bn in January, representing a 19.8% drop compared with the same month in 2022. The SNMPE highlighted that the value of copper exports fell by 25% year-on-year to total US$1.25bn, which it said was due both to a 5.9% drop in the value of copper and a 20.3% decrease in export volume compared to January 2022. Gold exports were down 27.9% to total US$578m – this drop came in spite of a 4.2% year-on-year rise in the price of gold, and was due to a 30.8% decrease in export volume.
