EL SALVADOR: Bukele gears up for 2024

El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele is preparing for elections in early 2024. His personalist party, Nuevas Ideas (NI), and its allies, which between them dominate the legislative assembly with 64 of the 84 seats, pushed through two resolutions on 15 March: one to finance the elections, and one removing a constraint within the electoral code precluding any amendment to the electoral rules in the year before elections. The latter is controversial, not least because Bukele has publicly expressed his support for sweeping changes to the electoral system that NI and its allies have dutifully begun to pursue.
