GUATEMALA: Presidential candidate targeted in crackdown

Former diplomat Edmond Mulet, a well-respected figure in Guatemala, is the latest presidential candidate ahead of the 25 June general election to face uncertainty over his political future. Earlier this week, Rafael Curruchiche, the discredited head of the special anti-impunity unit (Feci) in the attorney general’s office, requested the lifting of the immunity that Mulet enjoys as a presidential candidate for early campaigning and obstructing justice. Mulet, who a new poll showed was running second, had publicly spoken out against the worsening situation in Guatemala regarding freedom of expression – in particular the fate of arrested journalist José Rubén Zamora [WR-22-31] – and rule of law under President Alejandro Giammattei.
