US announces more assistance to address Venezuela humanitarian crises

Venezuela: On 17 March, the US State Department announced US$140m in additional humanitarian assistance and more than US$31m in development assistance to address the social and humanitarian crises afflicting Venezuela. In a press release the US State Department said the financial assistance aimed to “respond to the needs of vulnerable Venezuelans in Venezuela, Venezuelan refugees and migrants, and their generous host communities across the region”. According to the statement, the package includes over US$56m through its Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM) and more than US$115m through the US Agency for International Development (USAID). The US State Department said the assistance “makes good” on commitments made via the Los Angeles Declaration on Migration and Protection, signed in June 2022, to “support countries hosting large populations of displaced migrants and refugees”. According to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the number of Venezuelan migrants and refugees has exceeded 7m globally, making it “the second-largest external displacement crisis in the world”, while a further 7.7m people in Venezuela were in need of humanitarian assistance as of March 2023. Since 2017, the US has provided financial aid to Venezuela totalling more than US$2.8bn, including US$2.5bn in humanitarian assistance, and US$387m in development assistance. According to the State Department, this makes the US the largest single donor responding to the situation in Venezuela.
