In brief: Mexico calls for consolidation of Mundo Maya tourism project

*Mexico’s tourism (Sectur) minister, Miguel Torruco Marqués, has met other top tourism officials from countries comprising Mundo Maya (the broad description given to countries in the isthmus which were once part of the Mayan empire), at the Tianguis Turístico annual international tourism trade fair taking place in Mexico City (CDMX). According to the Mexican government, Torruco met his Honduran counterpart, Yadira Gómez Cisneros; Mercedes Silva, the director of territorial tourism development at El Salvador’s tourism corporation (Corsatur), an official government body; Anayansy Carolina Rodríguez, general director of Guatemala’s tourism institute; and Nicole Solano, the CEO of Belize’s tourism ministry. Highlighting that in 2021, the sub-region registered US$21.8bn in tourism revenue, attracting 34.35m tourists, Torruco called for the area to be further promoted as a multi-destination region to boost tourism development.
