HONDURAS: Relations with Beijing formalised
President Xiomara Castro’s instruction to commence negotiations to open diplomatic relations with mainland China [WR-23-11] has now been carried out. On 25 March the Honduran government confirmed that it had severed ties with Taiwan after 82 years and established relations with China, whose ‘One China’ policy it now recognised. The announcement was made three days after a Honduran delegation headed up by the foreign minister, Eduardo Enrique Reina, began a visit to China. While little concrete detail was revealed initially regarding the reasons for the diplomatic shake-up - beyond Honduras being ‘up to its neck’ in financial challenges and debt - more has emerged regarding the build-up to Honduras’s decision, which now leaves Taiwan with just Guatemala and Belize as allies in Central America, previously a bastion of support for Taipei.
