CUBA: Government battles abstention in electoral test

“The numbers say more than words. It’s a clean home-run.” This was President Miguel Díaz-Canel’s response to official reports of 76% turnout in the elections on 26 March to pick the 470-member national assembly. Next month the assembly will choose the ‘new’ 31-member council of state and Cuban president, which selects the council of ministers and heads of government, when Díaz-Canel, who took office in April 2018 for a five-year term, will be re-appointed.
