MEXICO: Deadly fire raises scrutiny on migration policy
Local and international human rights organisations have forcefully condemned the deaths of 38 migrants in a fire at a federal migration facility in Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua state. The incident has raised scrutiny on the practice of immigration detention, conditions in Mexican migration centres, and the impact of US migration policies on Mexican border towns. The tragedy is also set to place pressure on the government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to do more to protect migrants, with both the interior and foreign ministers seeking to absolve themselves of responsibility.
