Top court ruling paves way for Lasso impeachment

President Guillermo Lasso’s prospects of survival are hanging by a thread after Ecuador’s constitutional court (CC) ruled on 29 March that the national assembly could proceed with an impeachment trial against him. Lasso stands accused of embezzlement in relation to his alleged failure to combat corruption in his government in an impeachment petition presented by the left-wing Unión por la Esperanza (Unes) coalition and supported by a diverse range of parties. There remains one more administrative step before an impeachment trial can be launched, but the array of parties which have closed ranks against Lasso means that his chance of remaining in office looks slim. Lasso does hold one trump card, however – the possibility of dissolving congress and convening a snap general election before an impeachment trial can be held.
