Landmark trial reveals systemic corruption in Mexico

A New York courtroom sealed the fall from grace of Mexico’s former drug czar, Genaro García Luna, on 21 February. García Luna, who headed up Mexico’s public security ministry under former president Felipe Calderón (2006-2012) and was a key lieutenant in the so-called war on drugs, was found guilty of accepting bribes from the Sinaloa drug trafficking organisation (DTO) while leading the very organisations created to combat criminal groups.
