COLOMBIA: Ceasefire with Clan del Golfo suspended

A bilateral ceasefire between the Colombian government and the Clan del Golfo drug trafficking organisation (DTO) was suspended by President Gustavo Petro on 19 March, following two weeks of highly disruptive protests that the government claims were orchestrated by the DTO. From 1-15 March, protests by informal miners caused havoc to transport and businesses in large swathes of Antioquia department and parts of the neighbouring department of Córdoba. Whilst it is possible that the ceasefire could be reinstated, its collapse underlines the difficulties that the government will face in negotiating the demobilisation of criminal organisations.
