BRAZIL: Urban and rural violence both major challenges

The inhabitants of the northeastern state of Rio Grande do Norte had their daily life disrupted from 13-14 March as a local crime cartel coordinated a wave of violence in at least 19 cities, attacking public transport, local government buildings, shops, and private vehicles. The violence lasted several days, presenting the first major public security challenge to the federal government led by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and once again highlighting the power of organised crime in Brazil.
